Downtown novelty: $6M sky bridge to connect hotel, Austin Convention Center

Rendering of the planned Austin sky bridge.

A 33-foot, $6 million aerial walkway surrounded by foliage will connect the forthcoming Fairmont Austin hotel and the Austin Convention Center as part of a partnership between the hotel and a nature conservancy. Work recently began on the walkway and completion is estimated in May 2017.

The unique sky bridge was designed by New York-based Thomas Phifer and Partners. Along with Thomas Phifer and Partners, Michael Van Valkenburgh & Associates Inc. is also designing Waller Creek Conservancy’s revitalization of the 37-acre urban park.

The $370 million Fairmont Austin is planned to have 1,048 rooms and 130,000-plus square feet of meeting, convention and outdoor space. All that would make it Austin’s largest hotel when it opens in summer 2017.
